Sun Safely

As summertime approaches, remember to protect yourself from one very serious health hazard. Ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation cause damage on both sunny and cloudy days, potentially leading to skin cancer.

The bad news is: Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S.

The good news is: 90% of skin cancer is preventable, and 95% of all cases can be cured if found early.

To prevent the harmful effects of sun exposure:

  • Avoid the most intense rays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater.
  • Wear protective clothing and hats.
  • Do a monthly self-exam to detect any changes in your skin.
  • Wear sunglasses that block UV rays, including wraparound frames.

Consult your doctor if you notice any changes to the shape, color, or sensation of your moles. It may be an early warning signs for skin cancer.
