One Man's Journey To Gain Control Of His Health

What follows is the story of a Crown employee who, after receiving his Healthy Lifestyle Report in 2007, noticed some gradual changes in his objective tests over the last few years.  The number on the scale was increasing, the “belly” was getting bigger, and his wellness screening numbers were slowing moving out of the healthy range.

These changes were worrisome because he knew as these numbers increased so did his risk for heart disease and type II diabetes.  He made up his mind that he was going to make a change.  So began his journey to regain control of his health.

He started with the simple 2 step plan.  Exercise more and eat wiser.

Step 1: Exercise More:
Exercise had never been part of his daily routine.  However, he was determined to make it a priority. He purchased some home exercise equipment, and set the alarm an hour earlier 5 days per week to workout.  He admits that getting out of bed an hour earlier was difficult and probably his biggest challenge.  However, he was motivated and determined to get back into shape.  After a while it became a habit, a regular part of his day.  He started with 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise each day.  In 10 months, he worked his way up to 45 minutes of cardio at the maximum resistance level his exercise equipment has to offer.  That, along with a few weights and sit-ups, is how he starts his day.

Step 2:  Eat Wiser
“My eating was not bad, I just needed to make some small dietary changes”.  He eliminated his routine snacking between meals, reduced the daily sugary sodas or juices to just 1 to 2 per week, and monitored his portion sizes more closely. He found these dietary changes to be simple to make just by keeping in mind his overall goal to improve health and vitality.

The results have been remarkable.  He’s lost 24 pounds and happily reports the “belly” is gone!  In fact, he has had to buy a whole new wardrobe.  Most importantly, he has lowered his risk for heart disease and type II diabetes by bringing his screening numbers back into the healthy range.  He also has much more energy and mental clarity.  In short, he can’t imagine returning to his old and sedentary habits.

His advice to anyone who wants to become healthier:
“Remember, you are the one in control of your health.  Set goals, make small changes, choose an exercise program that you find enjoyable, and always keep the end goal in mind.  The results that you will see and feel will be very motivating.”
